"Any fan of Devilman should pick up this mediocre gem."
DEVILMAN!! Go Nagai's famous tale of love, lust, demons, revenge, and the end of the world. It's made an awesome comic, tv show, oav, movie, why not go ahead and make a game!? Well, the Devilman for the NES is better than this one, but don't let that stop you from trying it out!
The graphics were quite surprising for an old PS1 game based on a Japanese animation made into a game....from Bandai. I wasn't expecting a lot, but they did a good job. The game has a scary atmosphere and it's really awesome playing in the house the show took place in. The characters are all here, and the enemies are too. And its good and gory too. And Devilman has some awesome fatalities. The sound is decent. I don't remember it being bad, so I guess it was good.
One thing that really caught my eye were the FMVs. THIS is how the whole Devilman movie should of been. One long CG movie. The opening video is quite stunning, and shows Devilman tearing into bugs and reeking his havoc on the land below. Again, impressive for a Bandi Japanese Animation game.
Gameplay is where it all falls apart. The controls take a bit of getting use to, and then you have to play the game for quite some time before you even get to transform into Devilman. Akira has to run from the demons in the first stage, which is a nuisance because of the awkward controls. The game was hard for me too, but that's just cause I suck at games. But I would of liked it to be a little bit more forgiving. And more plentiful with the health items. It's all in Japanese, so I feel like I was missing out on various aspects but I was still able to make my way around with out much trouble.
Would I recommend this game? Definitely. It's violent, cool, and it's Devilman! Despite it's flaws, fans of the series or fans of demons and gore in general, should be able to look past them and find a fun lil experience. Good luck finding the game though....;-)
