TearRing Saga is a tactical role-playing game for the PlayStation developed by Shouzou Kaga's development studio Tirnanog and published by Enterbrain. It is very similar to Fire Emblem in gameplay. However, the similarities to Fire Emblem were so distinct (Tear Ring Saga was in fact entitled Emblem Saga until a few months prior to its release) that Nintendo filed a lawsuit against both Tirnanog and Enterbrain, citing copyright infringement. Further complicating the matter is the fact that Kaga was once an employee of Nintendo's development studio Intelligent Systems, and was one of the driving forces in the development of the Fire Emblem series until he resigned from the company.
The lawsuit was eventually thrown out of the Japanese courts because Nintendo could not show sufficient evidence that Tear Ring Saga was indeed illegally copying Fire Emblem's design. Nintendo stated soon after that the decision would be appealed.
As of May 2005, the sequel TearRing Saga: Berwick Saga was released for the PS2.
